Children’s Book Week

Did you know that we’re right smack in the middle of Children’s Book Week? Well, we are!  May 10 – 16 is Children’s Book Week. So what am I going to do about it? I’m going to tell you about some of my favorite middle grade and young adult series, that’s what!

Do you enjoy reading about fairies and dragons and ogres and trolls? Then you should journey to Fablehaven with author Brandon Mull.

For centuries, mythical creatures of all description have been gathered to hidden refuges around the world where they are watched over by human caretakers. Kendra and her brother Seth discover that their grandfather is the caretaker of one of these secret wildlife sanctuaries—Fablehaven.

Maybe you’re more into creatures of the night…vampires! If so, you really need to read Richelle Mead’s Vampire Academy series:

Love and loyalty run deeper than blood

Forbidden romance, a ruthless social scene and unspeakable nighttime rituals… all part of the scene at St. Vladimir’s Academy. Hidden away, St. Vlad’s Academy isn’t your typical boarding school: it is a place where vampires are educated in the ways of magic and half-human teens are trained to protect them. However all isn’t fun and games as the fierce and deadly vampires, the Strigoi, threaten to close in on the student body…

What? You say you’re not really into fantasy and paranormal stuff? *gasp* Say it’s not so! Okay, I’m better now. For those of you who prefer more normal characters, may I suggest Ally Carter’s Gallagher Girls series…teenage girls at a special academy for budding spies! What could be more run-of-the-mill?

The titles say it all:

  • I’d Tell You I Love You, But Then I’d Have to Kill You
  • Cross My Heart and Hope to Spy
  • Don’t Judge a Girl by Her Cover
  • Only the Good Spy Young

Love ’em!

So what are you waiting for? Get out there and explore the Young Adult and Children’s book shelves at your nearest bookstore! There are fascinating new worlds waiting for you…

Puzzler Friday: Stirling Bridge

Now here’s a puzzle with a bit of historical significance. Jigsaw.com had this to say about this particular piece:

The Battle of Stirling Bridge was a battle of the First War of Scottish Independence. On September 11, 1297 the forces of Andrew Murrray (or Moray) and William Wallace defeated the combined English forces of John de Warenne, 7th Earl of Surrey and Hugh de Cressingham near Stirling, on the River Forth.

A Day in Devon’s World…

My friend Devon Monk has a new release out today. Magic on the Storm is the fourth book in her Allie Beckstrom series, and I can hardly wait to get my hands on it!

To celebrate the release, Devon can be found at a couple of cool sites today. Check out her excellent article on fairy tales, aliens and inspiration at The Book Smugglers. A little later in the day, you’ll find her at Bitten By Books. Both venues will be offering contests to win one of her books!

And of course, be sure to stop by Devon’s website for all the latest details!

Good luck, Devon! I’m rooting for STONE to win. Mind you, I don’t know what the little gargoyle could possibly win, but…Go, Stone, GO!!
