A New Episode for Confessions of a Teenage Tree Sprite

I just posted a new episode for my Kindle Vella serialization of Confessions of a Teenage Tree Sprite. I’ve been thinking about writing this novel for ages, but just haven’t gotten around to it. So when I heard about Kindle Vella, I thought, why not? With the serial format, I could write and post an episode a week and eventually have a finished novel! Easy peasy.

The only problem? When I had this grand idea back in April, I had no idea when Kindle Vella would go live. How many episodes would I need to start the ball rolling? So I wrote and posted and waited for the green light. By the time the program started, I had ten episodes waiting for readers. Woo Hoo! Now I have eleven 😀

So exactly what does a teenage tree sprite have to confess? Hmm… I won’t know for sure until I finish the tale *lol* In the meantime, here’s the premise:

Nimue Woodward isn’t exactly your typical teenage girl. She’s a citizen of two worlds. Her father is mortal, but her mother is a citizen of Faery, a Sidhe Draoi to be exact. A tree sprite. Nim has been home schooled all her life, but she’s about to join the mortal world at the exclusive Mercer Island Academy in Seattle, WA. The daughter of a tree sprite attending a mortal high school… what could possibly go wrong?

In a way, this story is an offshoot of my Faery Chronicles books. Some of the characters from Faery Unexpected will eventually make an appearance in Confessions. Nim doesn’t know Claire Murray, but since both teens live in Washington State and both are also citizens of Faery, I have the feeling that an encounter is inevitable. Time (and lots more episodes!) will tell.

The Infinite Bard

For two years and three months now, a group of writers has been posting a free story every two weeks at The Infinite Bard. That’s over 60 tales of various genres available for anyone who visits the site to read.

Over that time period, I’ve submitted six tales– five by Debbie Mumford and one by Deb Logan. All are available here on my website on this page.

It’s been a fun experiment. Exposing new readers to my brand of story telling. Bringing new people to my website. Discovering other writers’ work and finding new favorites. But wow! Has it ever been a lot of work for our fearless leader. Talk about herding cats! You haven’t lived until you’ve tried to keep a group of independent spirits (like writers) on task.

Anyway, there are lots of great stories catalogued on The Infinite Bard, so you should definitely hop on over and read a few… or several dozen *lol*

Always Learning

I don’t know about you, but I adore research, even if it’s just figuring out when and why a particular saying came into being. For instance, in getting my newsletter ready to go out this week, I used the phrase “the dog days of summer.” Now, I’ve heard that phrase my whole life, but I suddenly realized I didn’t have a clue why it was so oft repeated or what it meant. Not really. Sure, I could guess that it had to do with hot, lazy afternoons… the kind where a dog might like to sprawl out in the sun and doze, but that was all it was, a guess.

What does that phrase really mean? When did it come into our common vocabulary?

Imagine my surprise when I discovered that the “dog days” hearken back to ancient Greeks who noticed that the hottest days of the year occurred during the time that Sirius, the brightest star in the sky, rose and set with the sun. They thought that the heat came from adding Sirius’ heat to the warmth of our own sun. After all, one meaning for the Greek word that we translate as Sirius is “scorcher.”

All well and good. The sun + Sirius = hot weather. Fine. What has that got to do with dogs?

To answer that question, we look to the ancient Romans, who placed Sirius in the constellation Canus Major, or Greater Dog. They agreed that the convergence of the sun and Sirius made for hot weather and referred to that part of the summer season as dies caniculares or days of the dog star… not quite the dog days of summer, but we’re getting closer!

The English phrase seems to have come into common usage in the late 1500s, as a popularization of the Latin phrase dies caniculares.

So, it’s not about lazy dogs on hot summer days, the dog days of summer is a reference to early astronomer’s attempts to explain the persistent weather patterns. Who knew?

And just because I can, here’s a picture of my favorite dog enjoying a lazy summer day…

New Cover Art for the Prentiss Twins’ Novels

I decided it was time for a new look for my alter-ego Deb Logan’s Prentiss Twins series. The first two novels are available at your favorite online bookstores and the third novel is being serialized at Amazon’s new Kindle Vella site.

Here are the new covers for the currently available novels:

And here is the planned cover for the third tale. Once the serialization is complete, I’ll release it as a novel.

A New Challenge

I’ve decided to join my friend and mentor Dean Wesley Smith in a blogging challenge. Dean has blogged daily for nine years. Nine YEARS! He’s riding a powerful streak, and I’ve decided to see what would happen if I did the same.

Mind you, Dean is an awesome writer and teacher and has so many irons in the fire I can’t even imagine trying to keep up. And I don’t need to… keep up, that is… but I can follow his example of persistence and add daily blogging to my routine.

So what can you expect out of this endeavor? Who knows! Certainly not me.

Some days I may have something to say about writing, but most days my content will probably best be described as eclectic. *LOL*

Today, my main content is an announcement of intent. Now to see what the future holds and how long I can keep a streak going. Should be interesting!

And just for fun, here’s a picture of my dog, Angel.

See you tomorrow!
