Happy Birthday with Zebra Cake

Birthdays are the best and one member of my family is celebrating his today! A special tradition in our family on this particular day is Zebra Cake, an amazingly simple yet delicious confection. That’s right… a birthday cake with only two ingredients… so simple to make that even the youngest member of the family can assist in its creation.

Want to know how to make this delight? All you need is whipped cream and chocolate wafer cookies (homemade or Nabisco). Simply frost the cookies with whipped cream, stack them in a log, frost the whole log, and refrigerate. When you’re ready to serve, slice on the diagonal to achieve zebra stripes. Easy peasy!

Want more complete instructions (and a recipe for homemade chocolate wafers)? Here’s a great site!

Hobbies

Over the years I’ve done lots of crafts. Needlepoint, crewel, counted cross stitch, quilting. If you can name a needle art, I’ve probably at least tried it. I’ve also done lots of machine work. Quilts (again), dolls, soft toys, clothing, even window blinds. If it’s fabric-based, I’m likely to have played with it.

One of the arts I most enjoyed involved a rather lovely sewing machine that had an attachment for machine embroidery. I was so wrapped up in it at one point that I bought design software and even created a few embroidery designs of my own. But mostly, I enjoyed buying other artists’ patterns, selecting my pallete of colors, and letting the machine work its magic. One of my favorite designers created soft children’s books. Here are a few photos of her designs and my machine’s work. (Obviously, this one was for a little girl. I also did one for little boy, but failed to get pictures of that one *sigh*)

Finished One; Started One

Ah, the life of a writer! I get one story out of my head and another pops up 😀 From contemporary urban fantasy, my muse drags me to science fiction… space opera to be exact. Whoosh!

And people wonder why I’m a scatterbrain! It’s a– ooo! shiny!— prerequisite– squirrel!!— of the job *lol* And that’s without adding in the dual personality traits from writing as both Debbie (for a general adult audience) and Deb (for kids and teens). Fun stuff!

I saw this on Facebook this week:

Except for the fact that I never learned to appreciate coffee, it fits me perfectly. Make it white tea or hot cocoa, and I’m good to go!

Lavender Fields

I adore lavender. A few years ago I had the opportunity to visit a lavender farm near Sequim, WA. (If you’re wondering, that name is pronounced “skwim” 🙂 ) As it was a delightful experience, I thought I’d share a few pictures with you!
